HORT 1200 Herbaceous Perennials

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Flowers, grasses, and other ornamental perennials are an integral part of any natural or man-made landscape.  Proper identification and landscape use of these plant species is a vital tool used by nursery workers, land managers, homeowners, landscape designers, etc.  The focus of this course is to develop the basic principles and hands-on practices needed to properly identify herbaceous perennials growing throughout the United States. (3 credit hours).


PURPOSE: This course is designed as a required class for those students majoring in Horticulture.  It can serve as an elective for all Agriculture majors.

Minimum Student Outcomes

Upon completion of HORT 1200 Herbaceous Perennials, the student will:

• categorize, by common and scientific nomenclature, herbaceous perennial species grown in and native to the United States.

• demonstrate how identification practices can be used in management decisions

• apply principles of plant care and maintenance in the design of landscapes

• identify unknown plants species using plant ID tools including taxonomic plant keys
