Certificate of Completion in Music Technology

The Sheridan College Music Technology Program offers a comprehensive course of study that leads to a Certificate of Completion in Music Technology. The curriculum focuses on recording arts, digital audio production and editing, music engraving, performance and self-promotion. Our students have access to some of the latest hardware and software in our newly-remodeled multimedia lab. They also enjoy a low student-to-teacher ratio, affordable tuition rates, and a scenic campus situated at the base of the Big Horn Mountains.

Why Music Technology?

Technology has transformed nearly every aspect of our lives. Many fields and disciplines have been radically effected by new technologies, and music is one of the best examples. Independent musicians are creating and recording music with powerful technology that was once accessible only to well-funded recording studios. Quality recordings created with consumer-level hardware and software can be indistinguishable from those made in studios charging hundreds of dollars in hourly rental fees. Thereʼs never been a better time to explore what technology can do to help you create, refine and share your music with the world.

Why choose this program?

The certificateʼs curriculum is focused on fundamental concepts and skills that can be applied to any number of software packages and hardware configurations, regardless of publisher or manufacturer. Students work with some of the most popular and affordable equipment currently available on the market today. Our students not only develop valuable practical skills in digital music production, but they also leave with a clear idea of how to begin building their own personal music-making workspace optimized for any budget. The certificate can also be the first step in training for a number of exciting occupations. With a background in music technology, a student might pursue a career in any of a number of fields including audio production, live sound engineering, and sound design for film, theatre, or multimedia.

The certificate has a number of attractive features that are collectively unique to this particular program:

  • The sequence of four core courses can be conveniently completed either in a single academic year or spread out over two academic years.
  • This concise certificate consists of 10 core credits* which makes it practical to attain as either a stand-alone certificate or as a supplement to another degree.
  • The certificate's curriculum provides students with an overview of a wide variety of music tech concepts, techniques and applications.
  • Emphasis is placed on getting the most out of software and equipment that is most used by today's independent musician.
  • No prior music training is necessary…only an interest in using technology to create and record music is needed to get started.
